Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, commonly known as SRU, is a public university located in the rural town of Slippery Rock, approximately 50 miles north of Pittsburgh. Founded in 1889 as Slippery Rock State Normal School, the institution has evolved into a comprehensive university offering a variety of undergraduate and graduate programs. The campus is noted for its natural scenery and traditional college architecture, providing a serene learning environment. SRU holds a moderately selective admissions process and is recognized for its strong programs in education, health, and environmental sciences. The university facilitates on-campus living with multiple residence halls and apartment-style housing options for students. While SRU competes in NCAA Division II athletics, it is particularly known for its successful women's field hockey and football teams, competing as the Slippery Rock Pride.
