Marywood University, situated in Scranton, Pennsylvania's urban outskirts, occupies a 115-acre campus characterized by its mix of Gothic Revival and contemporary architecture. Founded in 1915 by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, the institution began as a Catholic women's college and transitioned to coeducational status in 1989. The university maintains a strong liberal arts foundation while offering recognized programs in architecture, art therapy, and communication sciences and disorders through its five colleges. The campus features traditional residence halls housing approximately one-third of its undergraduate population, with the recently constructed Learning Commons serving as an academic hub. Marywood competes in NCAA Division III athletics as the Pacers, with notable programs in swimming and women's basketball.
