The University of Oregon, established in 1876, is a public research institution situated in Eugene, Oregon, approximately 110 miles south of Portland. The 295-acre campus features a blend of contemporary and historic buildings, including several examples of Ellis Lawrence-designed architecture, set among the Pacific Northwest's characteristic evergreen landscape. As the state's flagship liberal arts university, UO maintains competitive admission standards and is recognized for its programs in journalism, architecture, environmental law, and sports business management through its Warsaw Sports Marketing Center. The campus houses the majority of first-year students in its residence halls, while the Eugene area provides extensive off-campus housing options for upperclassmen. The university's athletic program competes in the Pac-12 Conference, with its track and field program particularly notable for producing numerous Olympians and operating at the historic Hayward Field facility.
