Youngstown State University (YSU), a comprehensive urban research university, is situated in Youngstown, Ohio, roughly midway between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Established in 1908, YSU became a state university in 1967 and now presents a vibrant campus atmosphere, infused with the Italian Renaissance architectural style that is particularly notable in the central campus area known as University Plaza. Offering a range of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs, the university has gained recognition for its College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and the Williamson College of Business Administration. While YSU maintains an open admissions policy, it strives to assess the overall potential of applicants rather than a purely numerical criterion. The university accommodates students through various housing options, including residence halls and apartment-style living on campus. YSU's Division I athletic teams, known as the Penguins, participate in the Horizon League, though the institution is particularly noted for its football program, which competes in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

Youngstown State University has an open admission policy which permits enrollment by any high school graduate or GED holding student.  7,971 students are enrolled on a full time basis, and 3,100 attend part time. In-state tuition for 2022/2023, excluding room and board, is $10,410 plus fees of $68. Youngstown State is ranked 983 nationally in the CollegeSimply.com 2024 U.S. Colleges Ranking.
