Youngstown State University is situated in downtown Youngstown, Ohio, approximately 65 miles southeast of Cleveland and 60 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. The 145-acre urban campus features a mix of historic and modern buildings, including the notable Maag Library and the WATTS Center for athletic training. Founded in 1908 as a law school and established as a public university in 1967, YSU offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs, with particular strengths in engineering, business, and health professions. The university is known for its STEM College, which includes the Rayen School of Engineering, and its College of Creative Arts and Communication. Most first-year students reside in one of five campus housing complexes, while the university maintains a significant commuter student population from the surrounding Mahoning Valley region. As a member of the NCAA Division I Horizon League, YSU's athletic teams, known as the Penguins, compete in 19 varsity sports, with the football program participating in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
