Wilberforce University, located in rural southwestern Ohio near Dayton and Columbus, stands as America's oldest private historically Black university owned and operated by African Americans. Founded in 1856 by the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the university occupies a 75-acre suburban campus in Greene County. The liberal arts institution offers undergraduate programs with particular focus in business administration, communications, sociology, and rehabilitation services. The university maintains a cooperative education program requiring students to alternate between academic study and professional work experience, making it one of the first institutions to mandate this type of experiential learning. Wilberforce provides traditional dormitory housing for its students and competes in NAIA Division II athletics as the Bulldogs.
Wilberforce University is a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) primarily serving the African-American community.
