The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP) is located in the rural town of Pembroke in southeastern North Carolina, approximately 90 miles from Charlotte and Raleigh. Founded in 1887 as the Croatan Normal School to educate American Indian teachers, UNCP holds the distinction of being the nation's only four-year public university established specifically for the education of American Indians. The 281-acre campus features a mix of historic and modern buildings, including the iconic Old Main, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. UNCP offers undergraduate and graduate programs across five colleges, with notable strengths in education, business, and nursing, while maintaining strong ties to its American Indian heritage through its American Indian Studies program. The university provides on-campus housing in traditional residence halls and apartment-style complexes, and competes in NCAA Division II athletics as the Braves.
