The University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP) is located in the rural town of Pembroke in southeastern North Carolina, approximately 90 miles from Charlotte and Raleigh. Founded in 1887 as the Croatan Normal School to educate American Indian teachers, UNCP holds the distinction of being the nation's only four-year public university established specifically for the education of American Indians.
