Salem College, located in Winston-Salem's historic Old Salem district of North Carolina, is the oldest continuously operating educational institution for women in the United States, having been established by the Moravian Church in 1772. The 64-acre urban campus features a blend of restored 18th-century Moravian architecture and modern academic facilities surrounded by cobblestone walkways and gardens. As a private women's liberal arts college at the undergraduate level, Salem maintains selective admission standards while also accepting male students into its graduate programs. The college is known for its strong programs in business, education, and music, with distinctive offerings in dance studies and women's leadership development. Students reside in historic and modern residence halls within the campus grounds, which are designated as a National Historic District.
