United States Merchant Marine Academy

The United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), located in Kings Point, New York, sits on a waterfront campus overlooking Long Island Sound, approximately 20 miles from New York City. Established by Congress in 1943, USMMA is one of the five federal service academies and trains students (midshipmen) to become licensed Merchant Marine officers and commissioned officers in the U.S. military reserves. The academy operates on a regimented military structure, with all midshipmen required to live on campus in uniformed service, completing both rigorous academic coursework and mandatory sea duty aboard commercial or military vessels. USMMA's academic program centers on marine engineering, maritime transportation, and various marine-related disciplines, with all graduates earning both a Bachelor of Science degree and U.S. Coast Guard license. The 82-acre campus features maritime training facilities, including a full-bridge simulator, power plant simulators, and multiple laboratories, alongside traditional academic buildings and athletic facilities where the Mariners compete in NCAA Division III athletics.
