Elmira College, established in 1855 as one of the first women's colleges in the United States, is located in the Southern Tier region of New York State, approximately 15 miles north of the Pennsylvania border. The 55-acre campus features Victorian and Collegiate Gothic architecture, with many buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, centered around an octagonal gazebo known as "The Puddle." Operating as a co-educational institution since 1969, Elmira College offers liberal arts and professional programs, with notable strengths in nursing, business administration, and psychology, while maintaining a historical connection to Mark Twain, who wrote several of his famous works at his summer home adjacent to campus. The college requires students to live on campus for their first three years, housing them in traditional residence halls and Victorian-era homes, and competes in NCAA Division III athletics as the Soaring Eagles.
