Barnard College, established in 1889 as one of the original Seven Sisters colleges, is a private women's liberal arts institution located in Manhattan's Morningside Heights neighborhood, directly across from Columbia University with which it maintains a close academic partnership. The four-acre urban campus features a mix of historic and modern architecture, including several buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is situated near multiple subway lines providing access to downtown Manhattan. As Columbia University's affiliated women's college, Barnard students can access Columbia's facilities and take classes at both institutions while maintaining their own distinct campus community and residential life system. The college is known for its rigorous academic program with particular strengths in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, maintaining highly selective admission standards. Students are required to live on campus for their first three years in one of the college's residential buildings, which house approximately 2,500 undergraduates.
