The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), established in 1874, is a public research university that marries the academic environment with the scenic surroundings of the city of Reno, close to Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada mountains. UNR's campus is distinguished by its historic Jeffersonian architecture, particularly in the historic quadrangle at the campus' core. It offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and graduate programs, with notable strength in fields such as environmental sciences, journalism, and engineering. The university maintains a moderately selective admissions process. On-campus living is facilitated through a variety of residence halls and student housing options, catering to a significant portion of the student body.
