Located in Kansas City's cultural Brookside-Volker neighborhood, the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) operates from an urban campus spanning 157 acres in western Missouri. The university, established in 1933 as the University of Kansas City before joining the University of Missouri System in 1963, serves as a major public research institution in the region. UMKC encompasses two distinct campus areas: the main Volker Campus featuring a mix of traditional and modern architecture, and the Health Sciences Campus situated at Hospital Hill, which houses the medical, dental, nursing, and pharmacy schools. The university maintains strong academic programs in performing arts, medicine, pharmacy, and entrepreneurship, while operating Missouri's only dental school. Students can access on-campus housing through multiple residential halls and apartments, though many upperclassmen opt to live in the surrounding urban neighborhoods.
