Fitchburg State University, established in 1894 as a normal school for teacher preparation, is located in the north-central Massachusetts city of Fitchburg, approximately 50 miles northwest of Boston. The 60-acre main campus features a mix of historic Victorian-era buildings and modern academic facilities situated on a hillside overlooking the city. While education remains a cornerstone program, the university now offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs with notable strengths in nursing, business administration, and criminal justice. The university maintains a moderate selectivity in admissions and primarily serves students from Massachusetts and New England, with most freshmen residing in one of the seven campus residence halls. Athletics compete at the NCAA Division III level as the Falcons, primarily in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference.
