The University of Southern Maine (USM), located in the urban setting of Portland, Maine, provides a diverse academic experience with relatively moderate selectivity in admissions. Established in 1878, USM has evolved into a public institution that enrolls a broad range of students in its undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. The university operates across three campuses in Portland, Gorham, and Lewiston, with the Portland campus being the primary urban hub near Maine's largest city. USM offers on-campus living options, predominantly in the Gorham campus where traditional residence halls and suite-style accommodations are available. Academically, the university is recognized for its strong programs in health professions, business, education, and the arts and humanities. While not primarily known for its athletic prowess, USM does field competitive teams in various sports, known as the Huskies, participating in the NCAA Division III Little East Conference.
