Spalding University is a private Catholic institution situated in downtown Louisville, Kentucky's largest city. Operating from a centralized urban campus spanning several blocks, the university occupies historic buildings including the 1871 Columbia Gymnasium and former residences converted to academic use. Originally founded as Nazareth College in 1920 by the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, Spalding offers undergraduate and graduate programs with particular emphasis in nursing, social work, psychology, and education. The university maintains a health sciences focus, with its occupational therapy and nursing programs serving as core offerings, while operating on a unique six-week block schedule format that allows students to concentrate on fewer courses at once. Student housing is available in two residence halls within the downtown campus, where students have access to urban amenities and public transportation.
