The University of Iowa, established in 1847, is a public institution that resides in Iowa City, approximately 115 miles east of Des Moines. The campus is characterized by a blend of historic and contemporary architecture, with Pentacrest at its heart, housing the Old Capitol building and four major academic buildings. Known for its comprehensive range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs, the university is particularly distinguished for its writing programs, including the Iowa Writers' Workshop. The University of Iowa embraces a less selective admissions process, offering various residential housing options to accommodate its students.
