Alumnus
I graduated from Millikin in the 1990's so it's been awhile, but as far as I can tell it's only gotten better. I loved the small campus and the fact that you truly know your instructors. As in, every single one knew me my name; I've been in the home of one multiple times; and two of my instructors attended my wedding the year after I graduated (which required them to drive three hours). I was in the Tabor School of Business, and I found the connections there to be wonderful, but I also know that the music school students have had tremendous success in Nashville and Hollywood. My child is now looking at colleges and it saddens me that due to her personality and need to be closer to home, Millikin will not be on her short list. Back at the time I was choosing, I had it narrowed down to either the University of Illinois (if I wanted to go BIG school) or Millikin (if I wanted to go SMALL school). I'm so glad I chose Millikin and I'd do it all over again.
Current Student
Overall, the campus and education are a great experience, and will get you where you need to be in life. The campus is very liberal-democrat environment that can feel very unwelcoming to a conservative-republican student. The housing situation is a bit ridiculous. Dorm life is normal for your first year. Sophomore and Junior year students are forced to live in The Woods at Millikin or else in Greek Life. The Woods is very overpriced (charging $800 a month + utilities), and the maintenance services are slow to do repairs when they are requested. My apartment did not have a working dish washer for most of 1st semester even after multiple work orders were put in. As I said before, the education and campus are good, but other than that, you may need to evaluate if the school really is for you.
Parent
The student/faculty ratio is very low which gives good opportunities for faculty engagement. The campus is attractive with well-maintained older buildings and some newer ones (and one currently under construction). The town (Decatur) is not great. Certainly rundown. The biggest problem is housing. The dorms are not unusual. Not great; not bad. It is sophomore and junior years that are the challenge. Students are forced into either university housing at The Woods or frat/sorority life. The Woods is insanely overpriced and poorly managed. It is extortion to require students and parents pay over $800 per month (plus utilities) for one bedroom in a mediocre apartment. Repairs and routine maintenance are slow. Security deposits should be considered gone as soon as the check is written. I wish my first thoughts of the university were of anything other than The Woods.
