The University of the District of Columbia (UDC) is an urban land-grant institution in Washington, D.C., providing a comprehensive, affordable education to students in the metropolitan area. Established in 1851, UDC is historically connected with the antebellum institution for the education of Black people in the arts and sciences. With its main campus situated in the residential area of Van Ness, a neighborhood known for modernist architecture, UDC contributes to the vibrant academic scene of the nation's capital. As the only public university in the city, UDC offers a range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs, including noteworthy concentrations in business, engineering, and the sciences. The university practices a selective admissions process, striving for a diverse and academically inclined student body. While campus housing is available to provide living accommodations for students, many also take advantage of residing within the cosmopolitan city itself. UDC does not emphasize intercollegiate athletics as a core part of its identity, hence its team sports involvement is limited and not prominently featured as part of its institutional profile.

University of the District of Columbia has an open admission policy which permits enrollment by any high school graduate or GED holding student.  1,566 students are enrolled on a full time basis, and 2,011 attend part time. In-state tuition for 2022/2023, excluding room and board, is $5,292 plus fees of $860.

University of the District of Columbia is a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) primarily serving the African-American community.
