Fort Lewis College sits on a mesa overlooking the town of Durango in southwestern Colorado, with views of the San Juan Mountains. Originally established in 1911 as a Native American boarding school, the institution evolved into a four-year public liberal arts college and continues to honor its historic commitment to Native American education by offering tuition waivers to qualified Native American students. The 364-acre campus, located at 6,872 feet above sea level, features a blend of modern and territorial-style architecture, with all major academic and residential facilities within walking distance. Fort Lewis maintains a focus on environmental sciences, teacher education, and business administration, while also offering strong programs in engineering and Native American and Indigenous studies.
