Colorado College occupies a 90-acre campus in Colorado Springs, Colorado, positioned at the base of Pikes Peak and 70 miles south of Denver. Founded in 1874, the liberal arts institution operates on a distinctive "Block Plan" academic calendar where students take one course at a time in intensive 3.5-week segments. The campus combines historical architecture, including several buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with modern academic facilities and residential halls that house the majority of students. Academic strengths include environmental studies, international political economy, and Southwest studies, with the college maintaining a highly selective admission process. The institution competes in NCAA Division III athletics, with the exception of its Division I men's hockey program, which has historically been a competitive force in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
