Located in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, UCLA occupies a 419-acre campus between Beverly Hills and Santa Monica. The university, founded in 1919 as the Southern Branch of the University of California, features Italian Romanesque architecture across its original campus core, while its newer sections include modernist and contemporary designs. As a highly selective public research institution within the University of California system, UCLA offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs, with particular strengths in engineering, film and television studies, business, and medical sciences. The campus houses the majority of first-year students in its residential halls, while upperclassmen typically reside in university apartments or off-campus housing. UCLA competes in NCAA Division I athletics as the Bruins, with notable achievements in basketball, including a record 11 NCAA men's basketball championships.
