The University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) is a public research university located in the Westwood district of Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1919 as the Southern Branch of the University of California, it is the second-oldest of the ten-campus University of California system. Encompassing a suburban campus of 419 acres designed in the Romanesque Revival architectural style, UCLA is divided into the College of Letters and Science and a number of graduate schools and programs, including highly regarded schools of engineering, business, film, theater, and the health sciences. The university is known for its rigorous academic programs and highly selective admissions process. UCLA offers on-campus housing across multiple residential halls and apartment complexes. Among its varied academic offerings, the university is renowned for majors in psychology, biology, and political science.
