I am a parent of a student who attended virtually due to the pandemic. I had low expectations of the academics for that reason but found my son was engaged and learning through the efforts of his teachers- they gave many (hard to grade) rigorous writing assignments - considering the on-line learning format was new for most, I feel the college did a great job and the academic standards are high.

Oxy is a small highly liberal college located in a quiet neighborhood in Eagle Rock. The average tuition cost is 75k year there could be some merit money in the 10k range provided to someone in need or for a 4.0 and 30+ on the ACT. Would say this college has potential given its LA location and small high school feel - its main deterrent is the cost, few clubs not great athletics, no greek and its party scene, kids drink a lot. Like many small liberal colleges, the hardest part is to pay for it then you can play on any sports team as sports not at all a focus few kids attend as well as professors will bend over backwards to ensure you get good grades, my student never did homework and had As. In summary, if money is no object and your student wants to be in LA at a highly diverse liberal college and potentially get involved there somehow it could be a good fit. I was most disappointed in the academics, much harder at a public college or junior college and for the cost I expected much more yet that could be my ignorance as a parent.
