Coast Guard Academy housing options?

I'm interested in applying to the Coast Guard Academy and want to know about their housing situation. Are the living quarters comfortable, and what's the process like for getting assigned a roommate?

At the Coast Guard Academy, all cadets are required to live on campus in Chase Hall, the main dormitory building overlooking the Thames River in New London, Connecticut. First-year cadets, known as fourth-class cadets or swabs, share double rooms with assigned roommates, which helps build essential leadership and teamwork skills central to Coast Guard service.

The roommate assignment process at the Coast Guard Academy is carefully managed by the housing office. Unlike civilian colleges where you might request specific roommates, the Academy assigns roommates strategically to help cadets develop adaptability and learn to work with diverse individuals. Your roommate assignment will typically be revealed during Swab Summer, the intensive seven-week training period before academic classes begin.

Living quarters in Chase Hall are structured and functional, designed to support military discipline and academic success. Each room comes furnished with essential items including beds, desks, chairs, and wall lockers for uniforms and personal belongings. While the rooms aren't luxurious, they provide comfortable living space and are well-maintained. Shared bathrooms and laundry facilities are available on each deck (floor).

As you progress through your years at the Academy, housing arrangements reflect your increasing rank and responsibilities. Upper-class cadets generally have more privileges and slightly more living space, though all rooms maintain military standards. First-class cadets (seniors) often have single rooms, recognizing their leadership role within the Corps of Cadets.

The Academy's housing system is designed to foster camaraderie and support the military lifestyle you'll experience as a Coast Guard officer. While the accommodations might seem basic compared to civilian universities, they serve an important purpose in developing discipline, time management, and organizational skills essential for military service.
