How hard is it to get into West Point?

I'm seriously considering applying to West Point and I know it's competitive. Can anyone share how difficult it really is to get in? What are they looking for beyond good grades and physical fitness?

Getting into West Point is highly competitive, with an acceptance rate typically around 10%. Beyond excellent academic performance, West Point evaluates candidates through a uniquely challenging process that examines leadership potential, physical fitness, and strength of character. The United States Military Academy requires strong academic credentials, including a GPA usually above 3.7 and competitive SAT or ACT scores in the top 25th percentile.

The West Point application process demands significantly more than typical college admissions. You must secure a nomination from a member of Congress, the Vice President, or other qualified nominating source. Congressional nominations are competitive, and most representatives have their own rigorous selection process. Additionally, you need to pass a Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) that tests your athletic abilities through six events, including basketball throws, pull-ups, shuttle runs, and a mile run.

West Point also requires candidates to pass a thorough medical examination at the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board. Your character and leadership potential are assessed through extracurricular activities, particularly those demonstrating leadership roles, athletic achievement, and community service. The academy specifically looks for candidates who have held positions of responsibility in school organizations, sports teams, or community groups.

To be competitive for West Point admission, start preparing early in your high school career. Take a challenging course load with plenty of AP or IB classes, particularly in math and science. Develop your leadership skills through student government, JROTC if available, or team captain positions. Maintain excellent physical fitness and start preparing for the CFA well in advance. Begin the nomination process early, as congressional offices typically start accepting applications in the spring of your junior year.
