A 59 percent grade is a F letter grade. A letter grade F means unsatisfactory performance in a class or on a test. A grade of F is a failing grade. Any percentage score in the 59 or lower range is an F on the grade scale table.
A 59 converts to a 0.0 GPA. All percent grades 59 or lower are in the 0.0 range. GPA is determined from a percent grade by consulting the GPA conversion table.
A 59 is a F and is one percentage point below being a D-. The cutoff for a D- is a 60 minimum. However, teachers may sometimes give students the benefit of the doubt and round up to a D-. This is especially true if your percentage is a fraction above a 59, like a 59.5, 59.75 or 59.9. If the F is rounded up you would benefit from an additional 0.3 grade points in your GPA calculation. This is especially important with a 59 because the decision to give a D- or F is the difference between passing or failing.
Aside from 59 out of 100, there are numerous ways students can end up with 59% grades. Here are scales for common number of test questions that can lead to a 59 grade.
