High school students, use our new and improved GPA calculator to determine your semester and cumulative grade point averages. This tool will both calculate unweighted and weighted GPAs for every semester using the standard U.S. high school 4.0 GPA scale. Additionally, your average letter grade and average percentage grade are calculated for each semester; as well as your cumulative high school career. As you calculate your GPA, you will see popular colleges recommended which accept applicants in your GPA range.
If you don't want to start from scratch and enter all of your prior semester grades, you can enter your current GPA in the "Current Unweighted GPA" field. Click on the checkbox to activate this option. Your GPA can be found on your most recent report card prior to this semester and represents your cumulative GPA up to this point. Note that if you select this option and have taken honors or AP classes in the past, your future weighted GPA will not be correct. If you don't have a current GPA, you can jump ahead to step 2. Next, you need to determine how many classes you have already completed before this semester. Enter the value in the 'Prior Classes Completed' field. This value is very important for determining your cumulative GPA. The more classes you've already taken, the harder it will be to move your GPA up or down in the grades you enter.
For each semester, you will need to enter the grade you received in every class. You can type in the course name for each row to make it easier to better track your progress, but it's not required. Select your letter grade for each course this semester ranging from A+ to an F. The corresponding grade point value for each letter grade will be used in your GPA calculation. Next select the type of class. This will factor into the weighted GPA calculation. By default, classes will be weighted as regular credit classes. If you didn't take any honors or AP classes, you don't need to worry about this. If are taking advanced classes, select the corresponding class type, honors, AP, IB or college credit. Selecting an weighted option will increase the point value of the grade you earned by +0.5 for honors and +1.0 for AP, IB and college credit classes. For example, an A in an AP class is worth 5.0 grade points versus 4.0 in a regular class and a B in an honors class is worth 3.5 points instead of 3.0. You will initially see rows for four courses. Click on the "Add Course" link to add additional courses to a semester. You can add up to ten courses per semester.
As you enter your class grades, your semester GPA will update in real time. If you entered any advanced classes (honors, AP etc), a weighted semester GPA will automatically display. No weighted GPA will appear if all of the classes in the semester are regular weight classes. You will also see a letter grade average. This is the letter grade which corresponds to the calculated GPA on the letter grade scale. Additionally, you will see your overall percentage grade displayed. This is the average score out of 100 for all of your assignments and tests this semester based on your letter grades.
Click on the "Add Semester" link to add additional semesters to your cumulative GPA calculation. You can add up to twelve semesters total. Enter your courses and grades for each additional semester as described above.
Similar each semester, your overall (cumulative) unweighted and weighted GPA are updated at the bottom of the page as you enter your grades. Additionally, you will find your average letter grade and percent average for your entire high school career.
As you enter your grades, we search all U.S. colleges to surface the most popular colleges on CollegeSimply for high school students in your GPA range. This list is only a small sample of the colleges you can consider applying to with your calculated GPA. Click on the links to the full list to view all of your matching colleges.
This calculator uses the standard (4.0) four point U.S. high school GPA scale outlined in the tables below to convert your letter grades to numerical points. Honors classes are awarded an additional half point (+0.5) for each class while AP, IB and college prep classes are awarded an additional full point (+1.0). Your semester's GPA is calculated as the sum of all the points earned, divided by the number of classes taken. This calculation method should be accurate for most U.S. high schools, though some use different methods.
You will almost always find your GPA already calculated and printed on your report card. If you're curious how it's calculated or if you need to calculate it on your own, here is how to do it. Calculation starts with the overall letter grades given to you by your teacher in each class. Every letter grade from A+ to F has a grade point value assigned to it. Look up your letter grade on the reference table below to determine its grade point value. If you earned a B+, A, A-, B and an A-, the grade points for each would be 3.3, 4.0, 3.7, 3.0 and 3.7.
In high school when using the unweighted 4.0 scale, the calculation is then pretty straight forward. Take every grade point you've earned and add them up. For example
3.3 + 4.0 + 3.7 + 3.0 + 3.7 = 17.7
Now divide the results by total number of classes
17.7 ÷ 5 = 3.54 GPA
To calculate a weighted GPA we must determine if a a class' grades are awarded extra grade points and factor this in. AP and IB courses are given an extra whole grade point and honors classes are given an extra 0.5 points. If the 4.0 (A) in the above example was earned in an AP class, that A would be worth 5.0 points instead if 4.0. The GPA calculation would look like this.
3.3 + 5.0 + 3.7 + 3.0 + 3.7 = 18.7
Now divide the results by total number of classes
18.7 ÷ 5 = 3.74 weighted GPA
