College students, use our new and improved GPA calculator to determine your semester and cumulative grade point averages. This tool will both calculate GPAs for every semester using the standard U.S. college school 4.0 GPA scale. Additionally, your average letter grade and average percentage grade are calculated for each semester; as well as your cumulative college career. As you calculate your GPA, you will see popular colleges recommended which accept applicants in your GPA range.
If you don't want to start from scratch and enter all of your prior semester grades, you can enter your current GPA in the "Current Unweighted GPA" field. Click on the checkbox to activate this option. Your GPA can be found on your most recent report card prior to this semester and represents your cumulative GPA up to this point. If you don't have a current GPA, you can jump ahead to step 2. Next, you need to determine how many credits you have already completed before this semester. Enter the value in the 'Prior Credits Completed' field. This value is very important for determining your cumulative GPA. The more classes you've already taken, the harder it will be to move your GPA up or down in the grades you enter.
For each semester, you will need to enter the grade you received in every class. You can type in the course name for each row to make it easier to better track your progress, but it's not required. Select your letter grade for each course this semester ranging from A+ to an F. The corresponding grade point value for each letter grade will be used in your GPA calculation. Select the number of credit hours for the corresponding class. Typically college classes are three or four credit hours. Courses with higher credit hours will affect your GPA calculation more than classes with lower credit hours. You will initially see rows for four courses. Click on the "Add Course" link to add additional courses to a semester. You can add up to ten courses per semester.
As you enter your class grades, your semester GPA will update in real time. You will also see a letter grade average. This is the letter grade which corresponds to the calculated GPA on the letter grade scale. Additionally, you will see your overall percentage grade displayed. This is the average score out of 100 for all of your assignments and tests this semester based on your letter grades.
Click on the "Add Semester" link to add additional semesters to your cumulative GPA calculation. You can add up to twelve semesters total. Enter your courses and grades for each additional semester as described above.
Similar each semester, your overall (cumulative) GPA is updated at the bottom of the page as you enter your grades. Additionally, you will find your average letter grade and percent average for your entire college career.
This calculator uses the (4.0) four point GPA scale outlined in the tables below in order to convert your letter grades to numerical points. Your semester's GPA is calculated as the sum all the points earned, divided by the total number of course credits taken.
You will almost always find your GPA already calculated and printed on your report card. If you're curious how it's calculated or if you need to calculate it on your own, here is how to do it. Calculation starts with the overall letter grades given to you by your professor in each class. Every letter grade from A+ to F has a grade point value assigned to it. Look up your letter grade on the reference table below to determine its grade point value. If you earned a B+, A, A-, B and an A-, the grade points for each would be 3.3, 4.0, 3.7, 3.0 and 3.7.
For college, we have to consider the number of credit hours each class is worth (usually 3 or 4) and multiply each class' grade by credits. For example
(3.3 × 3) + (4.0 × 3) + (3.7 × 4) + (3.0 × 3) + (3.7 × 3) = 56.8
Now divide the results by total number of credits
56.8 ÷ 16 = 3.55 GPA
