The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) is a public research university located moments from downtown Milwaukee, offering an urban educational environment with a campus that spans over 104 acres. Since its inception in 1956, UWM has grown to accommodate more than 25,000 students, making it the largest university in the Milwaukee metropolitan area and the second-largest in Wisconsin. It is recognized for its wide-ranging programs, with notable strengths in architecture, freshwater sciences, film, and healthcare. With a diverse array of more than 195 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, UWM maintains a moderately selective admissions policy. The campus architecture blends modernist styles with traditional facilities, including options for on-campus housing in residence halls and apartment-style accommodations. While UWM provides varsity sports teams known as the Panthers, they are not primarily recognized for athletic dominance.

In the most recent statistical year 16,852 prospective students applied, and 14,546 were granted admission.  Of those admitted 3,349 enrolled in the school.  17,520 students are enrolled on a full time basis, and 5,156 attend part time. In-state tuition for 2022/2023, excluding room and board, is $8,091 plus fees of $1,529. UWM is ranked 840 nationally in the CollegeSimply.com 2024 U.S. Colleges Ranking.
