If you are a student, former student, faculty member or parent, please help guide other prospective students by sharing your personal experiences at this college. What is it really like to go to Washington and Lee University?
Very conservative, homogeneous place. If you want to spend 4 years with wealthy, white, southern, Republican frat boys, this is your place. Lots of freshmen driving brand new BMWs, lots of hats that say "Country Club of Mobile" or "Charleston Country Club." You know that Congressman who heckled Obama during the State of the Union address? He shouted "You lie!" He was Joe Wilson, W&L class of 1969. Lots of Congressmen, governors, judges, etc. come from this place. The entire social life revolves around fraternities. 95% of guys were in frats when I was there. Don't get me wrong, you can get a good education at W&L. Good faculty, rigorous classes. I learned a lot. But, if I had it to do over, I'd go somewhere that exposed me to more perspectives, some place that had students from a broader range of backgrounds. This is more of a place to surround you with people exactly like yourself and reinforce your current opinions, if you're a white son of a doctor from Alabama or Georgia.

W&L is a great school all-around. Academically it is undisputedly one of the top liberal arts schools in the country. One unique academic charactarstic about W&L is the AACSB accredited business school which is highly unusual for a college of W&L's size. W&L has one of the largest (some years THE largest) percentage of students participating in greek life.
