Established in 1809 as one of the oldest public universities west of the Allegheny Mountains, Miami maintains a residential college experience where most students live on campus for at least two years. The university is recognized for its undergraduate programs in business, engineering, and education, while also housing the Farmer School of Business and a selective honors program. Miami competes in NCAA Division I athletics as the RedHawks in the Mid-American Conference, with its men's ice hockey program participating in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.
