The University of North Dakota (UND), located in Grand Forks, roughly 80 miles south of the Canada-United States border, was established in 1883, six years before North Dakota attained statehood. With its campus marked by distinct English Gothic architecture, UND is the state's oldest and largest university, offering a comprehensive range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs. Known particularly for its aviation and aerospace studies, the university also features a well-regarded School of Engineering & Mines and a Law School. UND maintains a moderately selective admissions policy, seeking students who demonstrate strong academic potential. On-campus housing is available and serves a significant portion of the student body. While UND fields a variety of NCAA Division I athletic teams, it is notably prominent in college ice hockey, with its teams competing under the team name "Fighting Hawks."

In the most recent statistical year 6,597 prospective students applied, and 5,494 were granted admission.  Of those admitted 1,753 enrolled in the school.  8,777 students are enrolled on a full time basis, and 5,099 attend part time. In-state tuition for 2022/2023, excluding room and board, is $9,237 plus fees of $1,714. University of North Dakota is ranked 384 nationally in the CollegeSimply.com 2024 U.S. Colleges Ranking.
