The University of Montana occupies a 220-acre campus at the base of Mount Sentinel in Missoula, situated in western Montana's northern Rocky Mountains. Founded in 1893, the campus features a consistent architectural style with many buildings constructed from locally quarried sandstone and designed in Renaissance Revival style. The university serves as Montana's flagship public research institution, with notable programs in forestry, wildlife biology, creative writing, and environmental studies that leverage the surrounding wilderness areas and ecosystems for research and fieldwork. Students can access five nearby wilderness areas and two rivers that flow through Missoula, while the campus maintains extensive research facilities including the Flathead Lake Biological Station. The majority of first-year students live in one of nine residence halls on campus, and the Montana Grizzlies compete in the NCAA Division I Big Sky Conference, with a particular focus on football played at Washington-Grizzly Stadium.
