Finlandia University, which operated from 1896-2023 in Hancock, Michigan, was a private Lutheran institution located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula along the Keweenaw Peninsula. The university occupied a hillside campus overlooking Portage Lake, situated in a historic copper mining region approximately 220 miles north of Green Bay, Wisconsin. Originally established as Suomi College by Finnish Lutheran immigrants, the institution served the area's significant Finnish-American population before expanding its mission and becoming Finlandia University in 2000. The university focused on liberal arts education with notable programs in nursing, business, and art and design before ceasing operations in 2023 due to financial challenges and declining enrollment. The campus facilities and athletic center have been acquired by Michigan Technological University, located in the adjacent city of Houghton.
