Tufts University sits on Walnut Hill spanning Medford and Somerville, Massachusetts, approximately five miles northwest of Boston. The hilltop campus, established in 1852 by the Universalist Church, features both historic buildings in the Collegiate Gothic style and modern academic facilities across its 150-acre main campus. As a highly selective private research university, Tufts maintains strong undergraduate programs in international relations through its Fletcher School, engineering, and pre-medical studies, while also operating the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine?the only veterinary school in New England. The university's College of Arts and Sciences forms the core of the undergraduate experience, with most first-year and sophomore students residing in campus housing concentrated around the residential quad. Tufts competes in NCAA Division III athletics as the Jumbos, a mascot inspired by P.T. Barnum's donation of a stuffed elephant to the university in 1889.
