The best part of Camp Hamp is the 5-college system, especially Amherst College for academics. Hampshire offers incredible opportunities for self-reflection and critical thinking but at a high cost. There is absolutely no accountability for moral character or religious/traditional values. While it prepared me to gain entrance into and perform well in an Ivy League (Harvard) graduate school, Camp Hamp is EXCESSIVELY liberal. It is not somewhere I would send my children or grandchildren.

I loved Hampshire, BUT...it's NOT the cake walk a lot of people think it is. It's a fairly academically rigorous environment. Don't let it's "alternative" approach fool you. Hampshire DEMANDS a very high level and quality of academic work and scholarship from each student. There's a reason why SO MANY Hampshire graduates get into Ivy League graduate school programs (myself included) because Hampshire is set up like a graduate school at the undergraduate college level. Be prepared to work your butt off.

Hampshire changes lives! It's unique approach to education allows students to follow their passions with a depth that most undergraduates don't get to experience. So while some may think it unchallenging because of it's written evaluation/no grades policies, most students are intensely involved in rigorous research. Access to professors is wide open and students are treated as fellow intellects. Accessibility to traditional courses is easily given through the five college consortium which also makes being in a rural campus have all the benefits of an urban college. "To know is not enough"- the college motto

I went to Hampshire and it is a fantastic school with an unusual and distinctive program that is great for self-directed kids who want to chart their own course with the help of involved and top notch faculty. The five college consortium is a wonderful resource as well. I transferred in to Hampshire and had an incredible experience there. Because it has a non traditional approach with evaluations instead of grades its quality is not represented by comparing it to other schools based on test scores and other traditional ranking strategies.
