Haskell Indian Nations University, located in Lawrence, Kansas, is one of only two federal tribal universities in the United States operated by the Bureau of Indian Education. The 320-acre campus, established in 1884 as the United States Indian Industrial Training School, transformed from a boarding school into a four-year university focusing on Native American higher education. The campus features historic limestone buildings, including several structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and serves exclusively Native American students from federally recognized tribes. Haskell offers baccalaureate programs in Indigenous and American Indian Studies, Environmental Science, and Business Administration, along with several associate degree programs. The university maintains traditional student dormitories and competes in athletics through the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) as the Haskell Indians.
