The University of Chicago is a private research institution established in 1890 and located in Hyde Park, a neighborhood on Chicago's South Side, approximately seven miles from the downtown Loop. Known for its rigorous academic programs and highly selective admissions process, the university offers a range of undergraduate and graduate programs, with notable strengths in economics, law, and the physical sciences. The university features a predominantly residential campus with a requirement that undergraduates live on campus for at least one year, promoting a close-knit living-learning environment. While the University of Chicago is not predominantly known for its athletic programs, it competes in NCAA Division III as the Maroons.
