Located in Idaho's capital city, Boise State University occupies a 285-acre campus along the Boise River, minutes from downtown Boise and the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The campus is distinguished by its blue playing field at Albertsons Stadium, home to the Broncos football team which competes in the Mountain West Conference. Originally established in 1932 as Boise Junior College, the institution evolved into a full university by 1974 and has grown into Idaho's largest higher education institution. The university maintains moderately selective admission standards and is recognized for its programs in engineering, business, nursing, and criminal justice, with particular emphasis on its computer science initiatives partnered with regional tech industries. Most first-year students live in one of several on-campus residence halls, contributing to a substantial residential population within the urban campus setting.
