Gallaudet University, located in northeast Washington, D.C., is the world's only university designed specifically for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Established in 1864 with approval from President Abraham Lincoln, the 99-acre campus features Collegiate Gothic architecture and is designated as a National Historic Landmark District. The university maintains selective admission standards and delivers all instruction in American Sign Language (ASL) and English, offering comprehensive programs in fields such as deaf studies, ASL linguistics, interpretation, and education of the deaf, alongside traditional liberal arts and science majors. Students reside in one of six residence halls on the self-contained campus, which includes specialized facilities designed to meet the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. The university competes in NCAA Division III athletics as the Bison, with a particular emphasis on its men's and women's basketball programs.
