Connecticut College sits on a 750-acre hilltop campus overlooking Long Island Sound in New London, Connecticut, approximately two hours from both Boston and New York City. Founded in 1911 as a women's college in response to Wesleyan University's decision to stop admitting women, Connecticut College became coeducational in 1969. The private liberal arts institution is characterized by its granite architecture, expansive arboretum, and waterfront views. The college maintains selective admission standards and is known for its comprehensive environmental studies program, international relations department, and interdisciplinary certificate programs called "Centers for Interdisciplinary Scholarship." Students are required to live on campus for all four years in the college's residence halls, which are arranged in a house system that integrates faculty and student life. The college competes in NCAA Division III athletics as the Camels, participating in the New England Small College Athletic Conference.
