Holy Names University, situated in the Oakland Hills of California with views of San Francisco Bay, operates as a private Catholic institution founded by the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary in 1868. The 60-acre campus features Spanish Mediterranean architecture and is located minutes from downtown Oakland. Originally established as the Convent of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, the institution became a college in 1908 and achieved university status in 1971. The university maintains small class sizes and offers undergraduate and graduate programs with particular emphasis in business, nursing, education, and music. Students can choose to reside in two residence halls on the hillside campus, which also features an NCAA Division II athletic program competing as the Hawks.
