I just got my SAT score back and it's a 1240. I'm planning on applying to state schools and a couple of more selective colleges like Georgia Tech. Is this score competitive enough, or should I retake the test to try and improve it? Any advice on what schools I should target with this score?

A 1240 SAT score places you above the national average of 1050 and puts you in approximately the 82nd percentile of all test takers. This score can be competitive for many state universities and regional colleges, though it may fall below the middle 50% range for highly selective institutions like Georgia Tech, where the average SAT scores typically range from 1390 to 1540.
For most state universities, your 1240 will put you in a solid position for admission. Many public universities have middle 50% SAT ranges between 1100 and 1300, making your score quite competitive. Schools like University of Alabama, University of Tennessee, and similar state institutions would consider this score well within their typical admission range.
However, if you're specifically targeting Georgia Tech or similarly selective institutions where the average SAT scores are significantly higher, you might want to consider retaking the test. Most students can improve their scores on a second attempt, especially if they focus their preparation on specific areas where they can gain points. Before retaking, spend time analyzing your score report to identify which sections need the most improvement.
When creating your college list, consider applying to a mix of schools where your 1240 falls into different categories. Look for some where you're above the average (safety schools), some where you're right in the middle range (target schools), and perhaps a few reach schools where your score is slightly below average. Many excellent universities like Auburn, University of South Carolina, and similar institutions would consider a 1240 competitive for admission.
Remember that SAT scores are just one component of your application. Colleges also heavily weigh your GPA, course rigor, extracurricular activities, essays, and letters of recommendation when making admissions decisions. Focus on strengthening these other aspects of your application while deciding whether to retake the SAT.
